Meet your Counsellor, Leslie Sanderson
Therapy is a deeply personal, relational undertaking. Self-exploration can be challenging and I believe the journey is well-worth it.
It is important to find a therapist that is a good fit for you.
My practice is founded on eight pillars:
Grounding. Building a foundation of emotional regulation strategies and resources to anchor in experiences of safety as you explore current and past experiences.
Relational Healing. What has been harmed relationally must be healed relationally. Our therapeutic relationship offers new opportunities to experience secure and supportive attachment.
Body-befriending. Using somatic techniques to heal relational wounds, re-friend your body and improve emotional regulation skills.
Creative exploration of childhood, early relationships, and impactful experiences to shed light on current relationship patterns.
Inner-wisdom. Discovering/recovering your authentic self and refining your values when the going gets tough.
Communication. Using the Haven Communication model to distinguish thoughts and feelings and practice self-responsible communication and boundaries.
Anti-oppressive stance. Examining the role society, culture, and systems play in your current situation; naming dominant ideologies that may be contributing to your stress.
Holistic health and education. Education about mental health can promote a valuable shift in perspective and I provide referrals as needed to local social services and holistic care practitioners.
More about me
I identify as a cisgender, white settler; my pronouns are she/her. I came into this world from a confluence of migrations across Canada and the US to the prairies in Treaty 6 territory. My ancestors were uninvited settlers to this continent, hailing from Scotland, Ireland, and England and making their home in New Brunswick, Canada and Virginia, USA. Most recently, my paternal great-grandparents immigrated from Serbia to Canada where my grandmother was born. I acknowledge my family legacy as an uninvited guest on the territory of the Snuneymuxw Nation.
I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and I have lived in the Pacific Northwest since 2008. I was drawn to counselling as a career following the death of my mother in a car accident. I sought out psychotherapy to help me explore my grief.
Death continued to haunt me and I lost my mentor, an incredibly caring man who had instilled me with a sense of purpose around my career. Eventually, I found myself at the Haven Institute on Gabriola Island and embarked on a decade long journey of self-discovery and psychoeducational training.
As I got to know myself, and started to discover my emotional landscape, it became clear that I needed to make significant changes in my life. My passion for psychology and personal growth could not be ignored and I began the process of shifting my career to mental health.
My previous academic background and career was in environmental science and geomatics (the study of the earth’s surface). My deep loving for the environment and natural ecosystems is core to my identity. I believe people are tied to the environments they live in and I am concerned with the mental health impacts of environmental degradation and ecosystem change.
Getting to know me
We often teach what we need to learn, and I believe this is also true for counselling. As I continue my personal growth journey my practice is constantly evolving to incorporate new understandings of myself and others.
My life has touched on milestones which help me relate to my clients. These include early attachment trauma, growing up with hidden physical disabilities, grief and loss, surviving and healing unhealthy family dynamics, radically changing careers in my 30’s, and most recently becoming a stepmother and building relationships with my stepchildren while nurturing boundaries in a blended family environment.
